70 Miles of Legend and Lore is a self-driving tour that you can take at your leisure. Created by the Heritage Trail Association, the guide was made possible in part by a grant from the Somerset County Cultural & Heritage Committee and Forbes, Inc., through the SCC&HC Mini-Grant Program. Additional funding was made possible by a grant from the New Jersey Department of State. The publication includes detailed driving instructions and pictures of many sites.
The 60-page booklet can be purchased for $15 at the HTA office at the historic Van Horne House located at 941 East Main Street, Bridgewater, NJ (across from the Commerce Bank Park). The Van Horne House has several rooms with Revolutionary War displays. 732-356-8856.
Copies can also be purchased at the Somerset County Visitor Center online or at 360 Grove Street and Route 22 East, Bridgewater, NJ. 08807. The center is open Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. 908-218-4300. A free ‘tourism’map and a county map are also available.
The self-driving tour was created from the original 60 Miles of Legend and Lore bus tour, an overview of the county’s rich past and colorful history. The tour begins in Somerville at the Wallace House and Old Dutch Parsonage State Historic Sites and wanders through Somerville’s Victorian District and then through Bound Brook.
The drive continues to Franklin Township, following the historic Delaware & Raritan Canal, and then into Millstone (forge), Hillsborough, Neshanic (old bridges), and Raritan (WWI period). You may then drive north through Pluckemin (old church and graveyard), Bedminster (tavern), Far Hills (the homes of the landed gentry) and Warren.
Enjoy beautiful scenery, rich and famous estates, Revolutionary War and WWI sites, the U.S. Equestrian Team’s headquarters, old firehouse museums, a camera museum, old churches and graveyards, gardens, Victorian houses and old bridges. Bring your camera!
