Ensuring the Economic Competiveness of New Jersey

New Jersey is in a tough position.  As with every other state throughout the country, we are consistently fighting for growth.  This means fighting for new businesses, while at the same time trying to hold onto businesses currently operating in the State.  Over the past few months, there has been an active debate regarding New Jersey’s use of business attraction and retention incentives, specifically the Grow New Jersey Assistance Program (Grow NJ).  While the current Grow NJ program is certainly far from perfect, with some minor changes, it can and should remain an important part of the State’s economic development toolkit.  In a perfect world, New Jersey would be competitive without the need for business attraction and retention incentives.  Doing business here would be economically efficient, the cost of living would not be as high, and it would be 70 degrees and sunny all year around.  Imagine the possibilities—it would be easy to attract and retain businesses.  New Jersey wouldn’t have to fight tooth and nail, just hoping...

The Citizen of the Year award, given annually to Somerset County’s premier civic and business leader, is the county’s most prestigious individual award recognizing a single person for community and professional activities that have contributed to making Somerset County a special place. BRIDGEWATER, NJ – To help Somerset County Business Partnership (SCBP) members interact on business-related issues, Special Interest Groups (SIG) have been established that provide opportunities for business people to come together from all industries and professions to network, exchange ideas, gain new business strategies, and contribute to the SCBP’s agenda. SIGs are a member benefit that meet in the Conference Room at the Somerset County Business Partnership, 360 Grove Street in Bridgewater, New Jersey and other major locations in Somerset County. NJ Senate President Steve Sweeney says it’s time to ‘fix New Jersey’

SOMERVILLE - For state Senate President Steve Sweeney (D-3rd District), New Jersey needs to change its ways before it's too late. "We're in a fiscal crisis," Sweeney told the Somerset County Employer Legislative Committee at a luncheon meeting Friday at Verve Bistro. "We're in trouble. It's scary." If nothing is done to hold down the cost of public employees' pensions and health benefits and public education, there will be "not many people left" in New Jersey, he said. Sweeney said he has been visiting county and municipal officials throughout the state to warn about the state's perilous fiscal condition and what needs to be done immediately to "fix New Jersey."
